THE REV. DR. DON CHILDERS At a congregational meeting held on September 26, 2004, members of The United Church of Los Alamos voted to call The Rev. Dr. Don Childers as our new pastor. The meeting and vote followed the 9:30 worship service at which Don preached a sermon entitled “The Great Upside-Down World,” based on Luke 16: 19-31. Don and his wife, Janice, plan to begin their ministry in Los Alamos on December 1st. Over the next few months we will be making preparations for their arrival and are looking forward with great anticipation to welcoming them into our congregation. Don Childers was born in Santa Cruz, California, and grew up in Oregon. He was attending the University of Oregon when he discerned a call into ministry. He transferred to Northwest Christian College where he received his BA in Religion. After serving a one-year internship at First Christian Church in Seattle, Washington, he attended Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, graduated with a Masters in Divinity in 1974, and was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the same year. In 1984 he received his Doctor of Ministry also from Brite and has since earned 26 hours toward an MA in History from Northwest Missouri State University. Don has been in ministry for 30 years, 15 of those as Senior Pastor, Head of Staff, in Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Texas, currently serving Memorial Christian Church in Midland, Texas. He is accustomed to long-term ministries, having served 9 years in Wichita Falls, Texas, and 11 years in Maryville, Missouri. Don is very excited about our multi-denominational identity and is looking forward to strengthening our ties with our larger church community. He believes that there is richness in diversity and is a person who can relate to those across the spectrum. He has been involved in cooperative ecumenical ministries wherever he has been and anticipates working with a congregation that embodies that spirit. The United Church’s mission emphasis is another aspect that attracts Don to our church. He believes that “the mission of the church is to share the love of God, introduce and invite persons into a relationship with God through Christ, and to work for justice in the world.” He has been involved in many community outreach programs throughout his career, including serving on mental health boards, being a trainer in a drug rehabilitation program, and working in prison ministry. Don is a talented and thought-provoking preacher. His aim is to deliver theologically sound sermons that are relevant to our lives. He’s a great storyteller, has a lot of intellectual curiosity, and incorporates new ideas into his sermons. He relates that he was particularly challenged toward innovation and theological excellence in Maryville, Missouri, and Greencastle, Indiana, university towns, due to the highly educated nature of those congregations. Team ministry is one of Don’s goals. He has an empowerment leadership style, allowing staff members to do their own jobs, but is able to step in when leadership is needed. He tries to create an environment that encourages innovation and cooperation. He is described as a good diplomat and has a proven track record in helping congregations work through challenging situations. Don has an outgoing, friendly personality and thoroughly enjoys visiting with people informally. He relates well to all ages. He has served as camp counselor in recent years and was keynote speaker for a youth spring rally in 2003. He places a high priority on providing pastoral care to those in need, particularly hospital and shut-in visitation. His many interests include reading, history, movies, and writing. He is an amateur astronomer and is currently learning to ride a horse, a life-long ambition. Janice loves working with adult learners, teaching computer software classes such as Excel and Access. She feels a sense of gratification in helping people gain the tools they need to live their lives more successfully. She has also been involved in rescuing animals and recently successfully raised and released several ground squirrels. She has been active in many aspects of church life, including teaching Sunday School and participating in women’s activities. Because Janice had surgery for a detached retina just a week ago, she was regrettably not able to be present for this candidating weekend. However, she did visit Los Alamos with Don for the initial interview, is recovering very well, and is excited about the move. Don and Janice have two grown children, Guy and Jacquie, who live in Missouri and New Jersey. They love pets, and their dog and three cats add much to their lives. This is an exciting time in the life of The United Church as we prepare for Don and Janice’s arrival at the beginning of Advent. Look for pictures elsewhere on the church’s website. Fall

In a few weeks the Finance Board of our Church will be starting the Stewardship Pledge Drive for next year. In the pledge material, which you will receive soon in the mail, is a brief narrative description of our Church activities and the estimated resources required to accomplish these goals. Also included are “Future Vision” plans for our United Church. It is hoped that this brochure will better inform you about the activities of our Church. The Finance Board, through the Executive Board, is estimating a total Church budget for 2005 of $674,000. All of the needs of our church and our missions throughout the world have been carefully considered by both Boards, as well as by our Church Treasurer. If we are to realize these goals, an individual increase in giving of 5% will be required. Prayerfully consider this information when making your pledge for 2005. The stewardship of the Church is the responsibility of all of us. Your financial support provides the resources needed for the Church to carry out its missions in our community and around the world. Childcare is always provided during Moms & More, and a $2.00 per child contribution is greatly appreciated. “Adopt-a-Grand”
Program!
“The best part of being a grandparent is that you can spoil your grandchildren rotten, and then give them back!” How many times have I heard that from a smiling grandparent? But in many cases these days, it seems that the spoiling doesn’t happen as often as either the spoilers or the spoilees would like due to the grand distances between grandparents and their grandchildren. If that describes you, OR if you just like having fun with young children, then we, the Moms and More group, would like to invite you to participate in our new “Adopt-a-Grand” program. Like many of you, most of us live far from our families, too, which means that our children do not get to see their grandparents as often as they (or we) would like. It has occurred to us, however, that there is a solution to this situation that could be beneficial to all of us, which brings me, again, to our new “Adopt-a-Grand” program. We would love for our children to be able to “adopt-a-grand[parent],” and we would love for those of you who are interested to “adopt-a-grand[child].” We would like to pair one “grandparent” with one “grandchild” (our children range in age from 6 months to 4 years old), depending, of course, on numbers. You would then be invited to our Moms and More gatherings every so often to spend time with your “grandchild.” Our first “Adopt-a-Grand” activity, for example, is planned for Friday morning, October 29, and will be a very scary, spectacularly spooky Halloween party! If you have any questions, or would like to sign up (and we ask that you please do call if you’re interested), please call Deb Worley. We look forward to having you spoil our kids (and then yes, giving them back)! Operation
Christmas Child
We invite you to join in this special project by filling and wrapping your own shoe box or by helping us buy new items so that the children's Sunday School classes may pack them on November 7th during the Sunday School class time. Last year we contributed over 50 boxes that were delivered by Samaritan's Purse, this year we hope to send even more. We will be collecting new and colorful toys, clothing and hygiene items, hard candy, and school supplies that will fit in a shoe box. We also need shoe boxes that are in good condition and large enough to fill with notebook paper, etc. Brochures will be available to help you purchase items and pack your own shoe boxes. There are some items that cannot be sent such as liquids, chocolate, and war toys, so check the lists before you make your purchases. Information will be available on the bulletin board in the upstairs hall near the classrooms or from the office. If you have questions please call Betty Apperson. Collection containers will be located in the office when you have things to contribute. This is one of the most important mission opportunities you will have this year. Please join us in the collection and packing of these boxes that we will send to precious children in one of over 95 countries in which these deliveries are made. Most of all, pray for this project. Pray for the children, pray for the contributors and packers and pray for the people who will personally deliver the boxes to the children. It is a wonderful way to share our love and God's love with others. Donation
Suggestions for Operation Christmas Child
The children who will receive these boxes may not have any other toys so please make your gifts colorful and things that can last a long time. If you include things operated by battery, please include extra batteries. Bazaar
