By now you should have received in the mail your annual stewardship packet. The Finance Board asks that you read these materials and prayerfully consider your financial support for the coming year. Also included in your packet are two volunteer sheets. Although the church cannot function without our monetary gifts, our gifts of time to support the programs and outreach of the church are equally important. So, in addition to considering an increase in your pledge for 2005, if possible, also consider an increase in the amount of time which you donate to our church. When I joined the United Church several years ago and became a Member of the Finance Board, I was impressed by the large percentage of the church’s budget which was earmarked for outreach and mission work. An increase in your pledge for the coming year enables our church to increase our giving to others in the extended Christian community around the state, nation, and globe. Please return your pledge card to the church by November 14th so that the 2005 budget can be finalized. If you did not receive a packet, extras are available from Mardel in the church office. After considering the results of this survey the Elders have decided to stop the 3rd Sunday Communions beginning in November. But since there is significant interest in having more communions the Elders will work on developing a special Communion Service combined with a healing service over the next year. The Elders would like to thank the Congregation for their participation in this survey. Grief

Baking with Chef Mac
Many people are not familiar with making these doughs at home, because they are a little more complicated than standard yeast doughs. These are laminated doughs, with butter and dough being laminated into thin layers as the dough is folded and rolled out repeatedly. When the products are baked, water in the butter is converted to steam that leavens the dough. With a little practice, you can make croissants or Danish pastries that are far better that what you can buy in most stores. Chef Mac will demonstrate the process by making croissants and Danish and will provide tips and recipes. Limit: 20 adults (NO children please) Mac can email or print you a copy of the recipes and information if you can't make the class.

Thanksgiving Work Party – Friday November 19, 9:30AM Advent and Christmas – Thursday, December 2, 9:30 AM “How
to Build Community Out of Difference”
Facilitated
by Dr. Gilbert R. Rendle
A question now facing the United Church is how to build and manage the community within the congregation given our wide spectrum of differences naturally present. Rich differences can both deepen people’s understanding and strain community. During this all-day retreat, Dr. Rendle will lead participants in exploring and applying: 1. The way in which differences and the discomfort of engaging those differences within the membership of a congregation is both normal and needed in healthy congregations and how managing those differences is key to shaping the future of the faith for the next generation of believers; 2. How the use of a “spiritual typology” can help us understand how and why individuals within the same community can gather together because of common faith and practice yet still understand and approach their faith in very different ways; 3. How “behavioral
covenants” (promises of how we will live with one another in community
while we disagree) can offer a way for congregations to share community
with their differences intact. In today’s culture of accelerated differences
the question facing most congregations in not whether we will disagree
with one another but rather how we will agree to behave with one
another while we disagree. The work on behavioral covenants will
focus on “behaviors” - how we will actually be with one another.
Morning and afternoon sessions will include presentations from the consultant and individual and small group work and responses. Dr. Rendle has led numerous groups in practical learning that directly impacts the decisions and behaviors that participants practice in their congregations. The Alban Institute is a leading ecumenical and inter-religious research and consulting group that works specifically with congregations across all faith traditions to lead and to strengthen their fundamental ministerial and organizational skills and to nurture their spirituality. Child care and lunch will be provided. Please register by November 17th with the Church Office (662-2917). Mission

A) Alternative Christmas Giving and Christmas Eve Special Offering – 2004 Alternative Giving: LA Cares is
a non-profit, tax-exempt, volunteer organization serving only Los Alamos,
and supported only through donations. It serves people and families in
need who live in
Oakseed Ministries is an advocate for the poor in urban areas of the world introducing the church through God’s servants who work among them. It also encourages partnerships between indigenous ministries and the church worldwide. The program is broadly spread in South America, Africa, and India. Your gifts will be used for medical supplies, bibles, preschool supplies, evangelistic outreach materials, and a broad range of similar needs. Shalom Ministries sponsors the Christmas care kit project for girls and boys in detention throughout New Mexico. These kits include a personal zipper bag with items such as: candy, cookies, Cracker Jacks, pocket calendar, photo wallet, inspirational tracts and a New Testament. Waterlines is a 15 years old, all volunteer organization based in Santa Fe. The purpose of Waterlines is to aid U.S. Churches and other organizations in providing clean drinking water to ten thousand people in rural Third World villages. This past year Waterlines has worked with water committees linked to schools, hospitals, churches and provided technical expertise and/or funding to new water drinking projects in Mexico, Panama, Kenya, Haiti, El Salvador, Nicaragua, India and Peru. Christmas Eve Special Offering: The Ranches, which consist of the Boys Ranch and the Girls Ranch, serve youth and young adults, ages 9 through 23. They provide assistance to those experiencing a variety of difficult situations by teaching appropriate behavior alternatives and better ways of expressing themselves. Troubled teens learn self-confidence, responsibility, and nurturing skills in a Christian atmosphere while being engaged in typical ranch activities. Young adults learn skills for independent living. B) United Church missions in our community and in the world The UC Mission board disbursement of funds for this month was made to Bread for the World, Kenya - Presbyterian Vocational school, NM Conference of Churches, La Jicarita Cluster as part of the missions benefiting from the Church regular support. The following is an outline of some of the missions who benefited from your support: Bread for the World: http://www.bread.org/ In 2004, Bread for the World celebrates 30 years of seeking justice as a Christian voice for ending hunger. A nonpartisan citizens' movement of 50,000 people of faith, including 2,500 churches, BFW members help hungry people by lobbying our nation's decision makers on legislation that addresses hunger in our communities and around the world. Kenya - Presbyterian Vocational school: http://www.pcusa.org/ The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has approximately 2.5 million members, 11,200 congregations and 21,000 ordained ministers. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. KENYA PARTNERSHIP The National Capital Presbytery (NCP) has an established partnership with the Elburgon Presbytery in Kenya. Within that partnership, OPMH has initiated partnerships with the Molo and Njoro Churches. We exchange correspondence with church leaders and children and send funds for the hostel for young women (a project of the Women’s Guild of the Molo Church) and for the construction of a hospital in Njoro (a project of the Development Committee at the Njoro Church). Members of the Meeting House have donated much needed books for the Njoro Library, Pastors, and educational studies, and sheets and towels for the Molo Girls’ Hostel. NM Conference of Churches: http://www.nmchurches.org/ The New Mexico Conference of Churches (NMCC) began in 1965. The mission of the NMCC can be summarized as working to bring understanding and reconciliation among churches and working to provide justice and quality of life for all New Mexicans. Together member churches of the NMCC represent over 600,000 New Mexicans. Prayers for the family of Dana E. Elliott, whose memorial service was held at the United Church. Prayers for Margaret Hanson and family upon the death of her sister, Cora Bennett of Sonoma, California who passed away on October 3, 2004. Prayers for a former member, Virginia Strniste, whose mother, Kathryn Detwiler, passed away on October 2, 2004 in Virginia New
