2004 Stewardship Campaign Begins
John P. Kindinger, Finance Board Chair

Members and friends of the United Church will soon be receiving the 2004 stewardship message and pledge package materials in the mail.  Recipients will immediately notice that the message from the Finance Board has a much more business-like look and tone than previous years’ messages.  Readers will also appreciate that this change in tone is accompanied by very serious message regarding the state of the Church’s finances and the need for the substantial increase in our goal for pledge income over 2003.

Beginning in 2002, a very serious gap between actual income and our budget goal of approximately $80,000 appeared and continues through 2003.  Possible explanations for this include a loss of senior membership following the Cerro Grande Fire (people leaving town), the senior pastor’s sabbatical, and now the process of finding a senior pastor.  This gap between budgeted and actual income has been managed through a combination of fortunate circumstances such as light snowfall and voluntary restraints in spending by the Missions, Trustees, and other boards.  Even with this, we had to use $12,756 from reserves to make ends meet in 2002, and we currently estimate that another $5,000 to $15,000 will be needed in 2003.

The use of reserves to make up for shortfalls in income cannot continue.  If income is not increased, a structural reduction in expenses will be required.  A review of the proposed budget section in the stewardship message shows that there are only two options for achieving significant cost reductions, cuts in mission commitments or staffing – both, I believe, are unacceptable to most members.

Although this stewardship message classically bases our goals on the needs of the Church as outlined in a budget, there is also a higher challenge presented.  This higher challenge is to raise our level of giving beyond the minimum needs of the Church as expressed in the budget in order to fulfill our individual spiritual needs as followers of Jesus who want to give as an act of discipleship.

Prayerfully consider this information when considering your pledge for 2004.  The stewardship of the Church is the responsibility of all of us.  Your financial support provides the resources needed for the Church to carry out its missions in our community and around the world.

Truchas Day Care Center Christmas
The Truchas Day Care Center is planning to celebrate Christmas with the members of the Truchas Senior Center again this year.  Last year's party was a joyous occasion.  For the children between 2 1/2 and 5 years of age, we would like to have stretch gloves, caps, stuffed  animals, toys, candy, books, coloring books and crayons or paints, glue, scissors, games, or anything a youngster will be happy to find in his big paper bag from Santa (John Charles).  We have been making the Christmas party  for these youngsters a memorable time for several years.  They greatly enjoy and appreciate our generosity.  Jean Picard will assemble the gifts.  Thank you for remembering these little ones at Christmas time.  There will be about twenty-five children.

Live in the Moment

I was regretting the past
and fearing the future.
Suddenly God was speaking:  “MY NAME IS ‘I AM.’”
I waited, God continued:
“When you live in the past, with its mistakes and regrets,
it is hard.  I am not there.
MY NAME IS NOT ‘I WILL BE.’  “When you live in  this moment,
it is not hard.  I am here.
MY NAME IS ‘I AM.’

Coffee Hosts for November
Everyone appreciates our coffee hosts.  If you have never been a coffee host before, the instructions are posted inside the cabinet in the kitchen located at the back of the church.  All the supplies you need are right there.  Now that the weather is getting colder and wetter, we will be enjoying our social time in Fellowship Hall after church, so there are no tables to set up outside or coffee pots to carry out.  Please call Irene Powell if you would like to make coffee on a Sunday morning in November or December.  Thank you!

Stephen Ministry Continuing Education
A new Stephen Ministry Training Class will begin in Mid January.  If you enjoy people, are able to empathize with their pain, willing to spend an hour a week visiting someone who needs a listener, then we need you!!  Don't know what to say when someone is hurting and afraid you won't do the right thing?  We will teach you what to do.  Just being there for someone is showing God's presence; and remember, you are not alone--He is walking with you as you meet with your care receiver.  Please contact Kathleen Logan, Mac Ennis, Marlene Henins, Bill Purtyman, or Maggie Davis regarding more information for the new class or questions about the Stephen Ministry program.

Hand in Hand
Hand-in-Hand establishes and supports Jewish-Arab schools in Israel to promote mutual understanding and respect between these people.  At the luncheon, to which all our people are invited, bagels and other food will be served by the Jewish Center.  They will explain in more detail this work, perhaps utilizing a video, and offering opportunity for individuals here to participate financially and otherwise.

Cofounder of Hand-in-Hand, Amin Khalaf, makes this observation:  "I feel great satisfaction when I visit these schools and enter an atmosphere where Jews and Arabs are truly working together to bring up a new generation and create a new reality.  I see staff and parents working hard to bridge the gaps in language, holidays, and even educational expectations.  This struggle is at the heart of our work, and the compromises and solutions that emerge are the fruit of shaping our lives together."

We invite our people to join with those from the Jewish Center in this meaningful time together on November 16th, at 12:15 pm in Graves Hall.

Fruit Bearing
During my teens I lived in Nacogdoches, an East Texas town.  One spring, I planted a large garden.  Among of the crops I planted were tomatoes.  Was I in for a surprise!  Some of the scraggly tomato vines produced large, luscious tomatoes.  On the other hand some of the tomato vines with abundant foliage produced but a few puny fruit.

Going on through life I have noticed that some people, looked at through the world’s eyes, seem to be puny with little to offer.  Yet these people often bear the finest and most luscious fruits for God.  Others who have rich foliage may produce puny or no fruit for God.

Which kind of a Christian am I?  What fruit do I bear for God’s kingdom?  I invite you to read Luke 13:69.  Consider:  Who owns the garden?  Who is the gardener?  Will I be able to bear fruit for God next year?

I pray we each will have Christ’s strength and guidance to do that and to
produce luscious fruit for God’s kingdom.

In Christ’s love,
  Howard
