Welcoming
Sunday
We know how
wonderful our church is and how important worship is to us in our busy
lives. We need to share the joy. Welcome your friends, neighbors
and co-workers to church on May 18th, Visitors' Sunday. You
have been meaning to do this and you know you should, now you have an easy
way to do this. The Membership and Evangelism Board is sponsoring
this event. There will even be postcards with all the information so if
you are too uncomfortable to make that call, just send them a postcard.
You can bring them to the 8:00 or 9:30 a.m. service. There will be a church
pot-luck lunch at 11:00 in Graves Hall. So tell your friends that they
can have a free lunch too. Please don't ask them to bring anything,
which means we have to bring extra for them. We don't want anyone
to go away hungry. Let's show them what a church pot-luck is all
about. Please bring lots of:
A-D
Salads, your favorite
E-M
Main dishes, hot and cold
N-R
Desserts, yummy
S-Z
Appetizers, chips/dips, vegetables, breads and whatever else4 you
think we need!
Don't miss
this BIG event. It will be a good chance to introduce others to our church
and introduce yourself to new faces. See you there!

Friends on Loan” is
the title of Dr. Conrad’s sermon on this Communion Sunday. The theme
is that of friendship. The Scriptural texts are Exodus 33:7-11 and
John 15:11-17. |
| May

“Our Father . . . “ is a strange
title for a sermon on Mother’s Day but Jay Dee Conrad will focus on the
feminine side of the parable of the prodigal’s father. The Scriptures
are Isaiah 63:15-19 and Luke 15:11-32. |

Invite a friend Sunday! Based
on II Corinthians 5:16-6:2 Jay Dee is preaching a sermon on the church.

Long
Range Planning Committee
As reported
in the April Chimes, the Long Range Planning Committee is starting a process
to review and update the Vision and Goals for the United Church of Los
Alamos as endorsed by the congregation in 1998. The process will
address what has been accomplished, how it has been used, address changes
that have occurred in the last 4 years and update the Vision and Goals
of the United Church for the next 4-5 years. The 1998 Vision and
Goals were included in the April Chimes, will be available on the Church
web site and there are also copies in the back of the Sanctuary and the
church office.
As we review
and update the Vision and Goals, the committee desires input from the entire
congregation. To accomplish this we plan to meet with the Church
Staff and the Church Boards. Also in the next couple of months we
want to have congregational forums, most likely during the Sunday school
hour, to give every member of the congregation an opportunity to discuss
the Vision and Goals with the committee. Finally we welcome any direct
communication with the members of the Long Range Planning Committee, either
personally or via e-mail. Below are the committee members.
We consider this review and update of the Vision and Goals a very important
task, as it will provide the basis for the identification of the needs
of the Church and will be used by the new search committees in preparing
the Church profiles used in the search process. We look forward to
many meaningful discussions.

Columbarium
Update
What joy it
is to see the newest plantings in the Columbarium Garden!
Memorials
to Bill Berner were used by Sandie to enhance screening behind the benches.
Some smaller, compact evergreens and new bushes were added. Thank you Sandie.
A few bulbs
poked through in time for Easter and last year's plantings are budding.
Trustees are
moving forward on paving the entryway plus a path around inside for wheelchair
access. A firmer footing for all will be assured by this upcoming project.
Please consider
the Columbarium for your own future or memorials to loved ones.

Call
for All-Church Camp Organizers
The United
Church's All-Church Camp is just four months away. This year we found
some young guy who didn't know any better to be the retreat chairperson.
Eric Schmierer is heading the efforts this year to make this the best church
camp ever, or at least the most memorable. To make this possible,
though, we need volunteers to help with organization of all aspects of
the weekend. We are holding a meeting Sunday, May 4th at 11:00 in
Kathleen's office to begin this process. Possible opportunities to volunteer
are coordinating meals, registration, weekend children's activities, campfire
host, publicity, activities, and presentation facilitator. If you
are interested in coordinating one of these area or would just like to
help, please attend. If you would like to help and cannot attend,
please contact Eric ahead of time.

From
Our Pastor
Conrad's
Corner
One doesn’t
retire from something . . .
one retires to something!
Over the past few years . . .
that sentiment has been drilled into me.
And since my announced retirement . . .
a number of you have asked:
“What are
you going to do in your retirement?”
Well,
I have a number of activities in mind.
I plan to systematically get to all those books . . .
(especially history, biography and novels) . . .
I haven’t gotten to in years.
I played trumpet all through college.
I plan to get my lip back in shape . . .
and join a
community band if I can find one.
I plan
to do some fishing . . .
the Deschutes River runs through Bend.
And some golf . . .
Central Oregon is known for its courses.
And some hiking . . .
in and through the Cascade range.
And some skiing
. . .
Mt. Bachelor is one of the west’s great ski areas.
Andrea and
I plan to travel.
We will visit children and grandchildren . . .
brothers and sisters . . .
friends and colleagues.
We hope to travel the United States . . .
and Europe and perhaps Africa . . .
and back to
New Zealand and Australia.
Finally
I hope to do some church work.
I do not plan to be an interim . . .
but perhaps a class or a sermon now and then.
Some of you after my presentation at All Church Camp . . .
suggested I take Holy Humor on the road.
I would like to do that.
I invite you to tell your friends and relatives across the country . .
.
about those presentations on humor and religion.
I will be
open to retreat and camp invitations.
I learned
recently . . .
that the word for retirement in Spanish is jubilarse.
The word literally translates as . . . to enter into joy.
That’s my hope and plan.
Joyfully yours,
Jay Dee
