Lenten Special Music Event
On Sunday, March 13th, the Sanctuary Choir will present REQUIEM by Bradley Ellingboe during the 9:30 am service of worship. Composed during 2001-2002 by New Mexico composer and UNM Professor of Music Ellingboe, this work contains all of the parts of the Latin Requiem Mass, as well as several additional texts. You might recall that our choir, combined with the choir from First United Methodist, presented this piece 2 years ago, as an afternoon concert for the community, using a small instrumental ensemble, and conducted by the composer himself.

On this occasion, we will use a shortened version (omitting the movements more suitable for a concert setting) of this hauntingly beautiful work which is so appropriate for the reflective season of Lent, as it guides us through the darkness of Holy Week into the Lux Aeterna (or light eternal) of the Easter Resurrection.

Mexico 2005
20th Annual Community Mission Trip

*the average Mexican person earns $19.80 per week
*only 14% of  Mexican households have sewage
*only 51% of Mexican households have running water
*only 6% of Mexican households have refrigerators
*an average of 5.13 persons occupy one room per household
*over the past two years, moderate to extreme poverty increased by 10.6% or 6.4 million

The Community Mexico Mission Trip, sponsored by the United Church of Los Alamos and coordinated through Amor Ministries out of San Diego, California, built its first house in Mexico during Spring Break of 1986.  After nineteen Spring Break trips and five summer trips, over 1700 Mexico campers have built 101 houses!  Projects have included single and double houses, outhouses, a church building, an orphanage and concrete walls and floors.  Mexico 2005 will add three new houses to that list.  Students and adults from Los Alamos will head to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico during Spring Break (April 2-9, 2005).

One camper, named Krista, has been on this trip twice before and stated, “(This trip) is an awesome opportunity to serve others, and at the same time, have a blast!” Other campers agree and expressed that valuable lessons are learned, like how truly lucky Americans are, but that it is possible to be happy with far less material wealth.  Campers concluded that their Spanish improves, as well as their construction skills.  Ultimately, the students will be exposed to a very different kind of life than the one they lead in Los Alamos.  Sponsor, Laura Erickson, has spent the last sixteen years organizing, facilitating, and participating on this mission.  She believes that this trip provides an opportunity for youth to make a difference in their world, while improving the lives of Mexican families.  Laura wants the campers (youth and adults) to not only be exposed to poverty, but also recognize that by working together we can change things.

The Community Mexico Mission AUCTION will be held:
United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Silent Auction
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Live Auction with auctioneer Bill Horne
Sunday, March 20, 2005

This year a 1995 Ford Taurus, in good condition, will be auctioned,  along with  a catamaran (boat).  Other items include:  gift certificates for dinners, dentistry, massages, yard work, house cleaning, etc… plus household appliances and furniture, exercise equipment, jewelry,  art, quilts and much, much more.

Church News and Announcements
March Sunday Worship Themes

March 6th “The Spit Heard Round the World”
        John 9: 1-41
Jesus spits, makes a mud pie and heals a person’s blindness.  Suddenly all “heck” breaks out as the healed man is brought in, interrogated, and finds himself accused of being part of a subversive plot to undermine the faith.  Faith is about choices.  Sometimes good acts trigger angry reactions.  Don Childers will explore some of the costs of faithful living.
March 13th The Ellingboe “Requiem” will be presented this day.
Kathleen Logan will present an introduction to the Requiem.
March 20th Palm Sunday   “The Palm Leaf Scandal”
       Matthew 21:1-11
Scandals are a way of life for us.  Jesus is welcomed one day and accused the next.  The crowd chose Barabbas, a person of violence over Jesus, a person of peace.  Have we progressed?  Do we today choose peace or do we choose our own Barabbas?   Don Childers will explore some of the implications of the last week of Jesus’ life.
March 27th Easter Sunday  “Freedom!”
        Matthew 28:1-10
Mel Gibson played the Scottish hero, William Wallace.  In the movie “Braveheart” as Wallace is slipping into death his last dramatic words are “Freedom”!   Freedom has been a cry resonating throughout the ages.  Easter Sunday is a dramatic cry of spiritual freedom.  Don Childers will explore some of the implications and responsibilities of our spiritual freedom.

Special Opportunity!
For many years the United Church has sponsored a class fordevelopmentally disabled adults on Sunday mornings.  This class is interdenominational and open to the community-several faiths are represented.  This is an exciting program and is designed so that each student has a mentor/friend to work with him or her.
We need MENTORS.
This involves about one hour on Sundays in class plus a little bit of preparation, but mostly the students need help with reading, writing and simple handicrafts.  Youth (12 and up) are especially invited. For more information contact Jean Picard, 662-2971 or Barbara Seeger.
Please, we need your support.

Table Talk

Easter is Approaching
Easter is approaching. This is the time of renewal. Soon flowers will appear and new life will abound.  Resurrection is about new life and new opportunities.
At times we in the Church underestimate the power of Resurrection by limiting the scope to a discussion of “living forever”.  Resurrection is about the power of love to overcome hate and the power of life to overcome death.  As one person shared, the reality of resurrection is demonstrated daily when God is able to bring hope out of despair.
There have been many times in my life when darkness and despair seemed to dominate.  Through faith and the presence of God and others I was able to rise above the darkness and again experience the light.
One community that I served in was traumatized by the sudden closure of the main industry in the community, IBM.  Most persons in Greencastle, Indiana worked at the plant and its closing caused economic, social, and spiritual despair. The community decided not to give up.  The churches encouraged this attitude by pointing to the hope we share through faith.  In time new industries moved into town and the city recovered.  In fact the diversity and influx of new persons into the community caused a renewal.  It was a living portrait of “resurrection.”
Easter is about hope.  Nothing is lost in God.  When it looked darkest God surprised the world with resurrection.  In life, if we are faithful, the Spirit of God will continue to transform darkness into light.  That is the ongoing miracle of Easter.

                  Don
