Music Thank You
My sincerest thanks go out to all those who participated in our musical service of worship, MASS OF THE CHILDREN.  My appreciation, of course, goes out to each and every choir member for practicing and learning their music and for faithfully attending rehearsals….for our wonderful instrumentalists; Dana Boebinger, Betsy Grindstaff, Gretchen Amstutz and Len Stovall – all of whom have a close connection to our church,….for our soloists, Rachel Erickson, Randy Erickson and Joann Brown, who sang so beautifully….for Oscar and Jan Sander , who donated our vocal scores as a gift….for parents who carpooled and families who sometimes had to adjust their activities because of our rehearsal schedule….but especially for my accompanist and dear friend, Ruth Williamson, who spent many hours working from an orchestral reduction score which then evolved into a separate piano part for her to learn.  Rehearsal accompanists are often taken for granted, but are, indeed, the glue which holds us together.  Ruth is truly a gem.

United Church Mission Corner
Month of May 2004

The UC Mission board disbursement of funds for the month of May was made to The Ranches and Palau-Emmaus High Schools as part of the missions benefiting from the Church regular support.

The following is an outline of the missions who benefited from your support:

The Ranches
http://www.theranches.org/
The Mission of New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches, Inc. is to provide a variety of Christ-centered ministries that meet the needs of children and their families in New Mexico. These children are having problems that adversely affect their normal development and may be abused or neglected. As a private non-profit Christian organization, The Ranches employs caring, reputable staff who provide Christian alternatives to families coming to us for help. The Ranches strives to equip individual children with lifetime skills, values and beliefs in order to establish their moral character, capability and independence. The Ranches utilizes its resources to promote wholeness for children and their families through intervention, assistance, placement, counseling and residential care, attempting always to keep the family intact in the best interests of each child.

Palau-Emmaus High Schools
Emmaus High school is dedicated to providing young men with quality education centered on Christ. The program is being developed to provide college-bound students with a solid preparation for college courses and to offer non-college bound-students skill and knowledge to become productive within the context of Micronesian economy and above all to train young men for a life of service to the Lord Jesus Christ in all areas of life as God calls them to be and to serve.

If interested to know more on Palau, you can check the webpage of a former Emmaus High School graduate at: http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Palms/6757/emmaus.html Or check the (excellent) rating of the Emmaus High school among all Micronesian public and private schools at: http://www.micsem.org/pubs/counselor/frames/howgoodschlfr.htm?http&&&www.micsem.org/pubs/counselor/howgoodschl.htm

Mexico 2004 A Great Success!

Spring Break 2004 – Sixty youth and twenty-three adults traveled to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico to build new homes for four families living in poverty.  More than half of the youth were rookies on this trip!  We worked with AMOR Ministries, who provide a camp for us to stay, work with a committee of Mexican pastors to identify the families, and have all the building materials ready for us when we arrive.

Despite some adverse weather the first couple of days (it rained after we set up camp on Sunday, and we poured concrete in the rain and hail on Monday), the group built four sturdy houses for our families.  One family actually tore their house down on Sunday night in anticipation of our arrival on Monday morning!  They spent the week sleeping in their car.

Luckily the weather was great for the rest of the week, and we were able to build walls, put on a pressboard roof, and finish the walls with bailing wire, tar paper, chicken wire and stucco.  Back at camp each night, we’d gather around the campfire for smores, skits, singing, and campfire talks by Steven Mabry, who started our Mexico Mission trips in 1986 when he was our Associate Pastor.  Steven, his wife Marta Nielsen, and their children Kaylinda and Sam joined us for the week.

On Wednesday, we invited our families and the neighbors on the block for a hot dog cookout.  We held the dinner at a local church, right across from one of our work sites from 1999!  We held our community dinner there in 1999, when it was a large open space with trash all around.  Today, the property has several church buildings, and sits next to a park with playground equipment and trees!  The youth spent a great evening playing soccer and playground games with local children.

It’s always an emotional time at the end of the work day on Friday, when we gather in each house with the family to give them some gifts and hand them the keys to their new house!  We have a prayer together, then gather outside for a group picture.  This year’s families consisted of eight adults and eight children under 10 (with one mother expecting).

MEXICO 2004 was the 19th annual spring-break mission trip sponsored by The United Church. Mexico work campers on these 19 trips and those who have gone on the five church-sponsored summer trips have built the equivalent of 101 houses!   This great accomplishment would not have been possible without the steadfast support of all of the members of The United Church and many friends in the community.  Thanks to all the local businesses for their generous contributions, this year’s Mexico Mission Auction raised over $11,000!  Additional donations brought the grand total up to almost $16,000!  THANK YOU, EVERYONE!

The library has a new series of fiction books written by Phillip Gulley.  If you like Jan Karon
or Thomas Kinkade's books, you will like these.  The titles are:  "Home to Harmony", "Just
Shy of Harmony", "Christmas in Harmony" and "Life Goes On".
Here are two comments on Phillp Gulley's books:  "Life Goes On" is an extremely
entertaining and light reading book.  It is nice to read a book and laugh at the same time…..

You will love Phillip Gulley's newest books, the Harmony series.  Harmony is a charming small town whose stories and interesting, folksy characters entice you to read the next one and then the next one.  The stories involve a Quaker minister who returns to his hometown when there was an unexpected opening for a pastor.  I highly recommend these books--this small town is definitely NOT boring and the individuals that you come to know and love make the series  a "must read".

From Our Interim Pastor
Getting Life into Plumb

by Howard E. Grant, Jr., Interim Senior Pastor

“God proves his love for us in that while we still were
sinners Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8.

No doubt from early on God has been watching the way we construct our lives.  Sometimes we’ve been using shoddy mortar.  Other times we’ve forgotten our level.  Most often we didn’t bother with a plumb-line.
Where would our Mexico Mission people have been last April without  plumb-line and level?  How would the houses they built be doing now, if they had used shoddy stucco?
Think again of the leaning tower of Pisa.  It’s obviously out of plumb.  Every few years more concrete and more water have to be pumped under it to keep it standing.   Because it is not in plumb it is under constant stress.  Scientists know that one day it will crumple to the ground.
Are our lives sometimes like that?  Do we feel under constant stress?  Must we keep pumping in the waters and concrete of this earth to try to stabilize ourselves? Against that still we know that one day we will crumple to the ground.
Without a plumb-line a builder might construct a room or house whose inside     dimensions met all specs on the blueprint, but which was not square with the world.  Without God's plumb line, you and I could be right within ourselves, but not right with God.  What we need here is the master-builder who created us in the first place to come put our lives into plumb again.
Will that be hard?  Surely it will require some readjustments within your heart and mine. But it’s exciting to know that God is ready right now to help us make that kind of adjustment in our lives.
Even now our Lord stands at the door of our lives knocking, ready to enter upon our invitation and to help us adjust our house to meet the specs of eternity.
     Let us pray for that.

Lord, we turn to you for help.  Please come into the house we have built of our lives.  We need you to help us adjust to match the plumb-line of Jesus Christ, and we want our foundation to be level and square with your Word revealed.  We trust you as the Master-builder.  Amen.
