Scuba
Vacation Bible School
Make sure
your kids will have oceans of fun this summer on a Super Cool Undersea
Bible Adventure
Each day your
children will be part of fun Bible learning they can see, hear, touch,
and even taste! Bible Point Crafts, team-building games, lively Bible
songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the SCUBA activities that help
kids dive into Bible adventures about Bible people who went deeper with
their faith. As they learn about God’s love, children will also enjoy
hands-on Bible adventures and daily video visits from Chadder Chipmunk.
SCUBA is great
fun for children of all ages; even teenagers will enjoy signing on as Scuba
Crew Leaders who help younger children.
So mark these
dates on your calendar: June 23rd - 27th. The dive starts at 1:00
PM and will end at 4:00 PM. Make sure you register by June 16th.
See our web page, http://losalamos.org/unchla, for a downloadable

Sunday Worship Themes
| June 1st |
“Remembering”
is the title of Jay Dee Conrad’s sermon on this Communion Sunday.
The focus of the sermon, from John 2:13-22, are the words of Jesus, “Do
this in remembrance of me.” |
| June 8th |
Pentecost
Sunday. On this “birthday” of the Christian Church our theme is found
in the question, “What is foundational in our faith?” From I Corinthians
15:3-11, Dr. Conrad has titled his sermon, “Theological Spelunkers.” |
| June 15th |
Spiritual
growth comes from family and home, not institutions. With that theme
in mind Jay Dee is preaching a sermon, “Sunday School Parents,” based on
Proverbs 22:6 and Hebrews 5:11-14. |
| June 22nd |
This Sunday
is our Annual Outdoor Worship. Bring a chair or blanket and worship
in the courtyard. “What Kind of Boat are We?” is Jay Dee’s sermon,
based on Mark 5:8, Luke 8:22-25, Acts 27 and John 21:4-8. Special
music from Gary Eller and friends. |
| June 29th |
“Forty Years
. . . And Counting” is the title of Jay Dee Conrad’s sermon today as he
begins his one week countdown to retirement. Scripture readings include
II Corinthians 4:16-18, Philippians 4:8, Colossians 1:9-14 and Ephesians
4:15. |

Souper
Bowl Sunday
"The youth
of our church helped contribute to the success of Souper Bowl 2003.
Young people from all 50 states and some other countries, over 12,000 churches
and schools, raised over $3.5 million to help hungry and hurting people
in their communities and throughout the world. This brings the aggregate
collected since the Souper Bowl began in 1990 to over $20 million!
"Thank you
for helping transform Souper Bowl Weekend into a time of loving God and
loving our neighbors through your contributions to help those in need.”
"And
you can already begin saving the date for next year: Souper Bowl
Sunday, February 1st, 2004! See you there!"
Thanks.

Mission
Auction 2003 Final Tally
We are pleased
to announce that the Mission Auction, March 9th, was a rousing success
again this year earning $9,698.50 on auction items and receiving $6,747.00
of donations. The total of more than $16.4k was used to pay the AMOR
trip fees (which provides building materials and the camp facility) for
the Mexico Mission Trip, which took place over spring break. Dedicated
adult volunteers included new faces Cathy Molker, David Nochmunson, DiAnne
Johnson and Kathleen Walsh; returning personalities Arnie & Chris Sierk
and Nina & Gary Thayer; and time-tested veterans, Bill Horne, Mardel
Schmiedicke, Laura & Randy Erickson, Kelly Myers, Pam & Brad Meyer,
Adda Moldt, Rusty & Altana Gray, Barb Smith, Suzanne LeSar, and Dick
Tisinger.
The Mission
Auction doesn’t just happen. Yes, we are experienced, and make fewer
mistakes and omissions than in the learning years. But it requires
many hours from dedicated students scouring local and regional businesses
for donated items, lots of excellent publicity (thanks Kelly), many hours
of volunteer time organizing, tagging, entering and arranging items and
a wonderful congregation who donates heirloom pieces and then turns right
around and fills the empty spaces with one-of-a-kind Auction specials.
We give a tremendous
thank you to everyone who donated time or goods or services or cash (or
all four!). Keep Mission Auction 2004 in mind over the coming months.

Nina, Auction Co-chairs

Summer
Interns
LeeAnn Watkins
LeeAnn, daughter
of Stephen and Susan Watkins, is the first of the three summer interns
to arrive and start to work. This is LeeAnn’s last year as an Intern.
She has weathered well the initial staff meetings and teasing by Jay Dee,
has participated in a Sonlight Camp counselors’ planning session and is
oriented to procedures, as well as being a big help planning the many up-coming
events for the Mid High and Senior High Youth.
LeeAnn is an
Elementary Education major at ENMU, and will also be going to Sonlight
with the 3rd, 4th & 5th graders. Please talk with her about any
ideas for activities you may have in mind for the youth, and especially
if you are available to help sponsor some of the events.
LeeAnn, Becky
and Jeff’s office is Room 212, next to the church office, off the mail
room.
Becky Erickson
Becky, daughter
of Laura and Randy Erickson, is the second of three summer interns to arrive
and begin work at the church. This is her first official summer here,
though she has been involved in the church all her life (thanks to Mom
and Dad) and knows the staff well. She is very excited to get to
know the church youth and help everyone make the best of the summer.
She also cannot wait to go to Sonlight.
Becky is a
Sociology major at New Mexico State University and is working towards a
minor in Women’s Studies and a minor in math. She enjoys crafts,
cooking and loves music.
Jeff Hyman
Jeff Hyman
will be the third summer intern this year. He is a 2003 graduate
of LAHS and an active member of the White Rock United Methodist Church.
Jeff, son of Mac & Debby Hyman, plans to attend St. Olaf College in
Minnesota in the fall.

Long
Range Planning Committee
As reported
in the April and May Chimes, the Long Range Planning Committee is starting
a process to review and update the Vision and Goals for the United Church
of Los Alamos as endorsed by the congregation in 1998. A copy of
the 1998 Vision and Goals is available on the web, in the Church office
and in the back of the sanctuary. The Committee is gathering input
through meetings with the Church Boards, the Program Staff, the Youth Groups
and in Congregational Forums. Dates have now been set for most of
these meetings.
Three congregational
forums are planned the week of June 8th, 2003.
Forum #1:
Sunday morning, June 8th, 8:45 – 9:30 am in Sangrey Chapel. This
is primarily for the people who attend the 8:00 am Sunday service; however,
it will be open to anyone.
Forum #2:
Sunday morning, June 8th, 11:00 – 12:00 am in the Sanctuary.
Forum #3:
Tuesday evening, June 10th, 7:00 pm in the Lounge.
If you are
unable to attend any of the forums, or don’t wish to express your views
publicly, we still want your input! With this issue of the Chimes
is a questionnaire that can be used to provide your input. Also our
e-mail addresses are available through the church office, if you would
like to write your response or provide any additional input.
John Puckett,
Chair
Rilla Baxter
Jeff Whicker
Ann Cooke
Tom Christofferson
Bernadette
Lauritzen
We consider
this review and update of the Vision and Goals a very important task as
it will provide the basis for the identification of the needs of the Church
and will be used by the new search committees in preparing the Church profiles
used in the search process. We look forward to your input and to
many meaningful discussions.

From
Our Pastor
Conrads
Corner
Exit Ethics!
At least that’s what I call it!
How is a minister supposed to act . . .
in relation to the church he or she has served . . .
when that minister is called to another church . . .
or, in my case, retires?
It is
not easy leaving a church!
This is Andrea’s and my home . . . you are our friends!
One quarter of my ministry has been with you!
How do we remain friends . . .
in gratitude remembering the past . . .
and “innocently” live in the present and future . . .
without
creating problems for my successor?
If the
separation is not clear . . .
all sorts of mischief can occur.
The most common transgression . . .
is accepting invitations to return . . .
for weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc.
That is not fair to me as I am retired.
Nor is it fair to my successor who is now your pastor.
The best way to allow him or her to become your pastor . . .
is to let
your new pastor . . . pastor! (To make a noun into a verb).
So number one . . .
I will not return for pastoral reasons.
I should not be asked . . .
and, if asked, I will lovingly decline.
If that
is number one . . . what is number two?
It is to keep relationships with you “innocent.”
This means that when contacts are made . . .
e-mail . . . phone calls . . . visits . . .
they are made as friends and in the cause of friendship . . .
not as pastor/parishioner in the cause of ministry.
The United
Church of Los Alamos is a wonderful church.
I cherish someone else having the privilege I have enjoyed . . .
the privilege of being your pastor.
Ethically yours,
Jay Dee
