Ghost
Ranch All Church Camp Registration
“Archaeology
and the New Testament”
Speaker:
Dr. Jonathan Reed
September
3-6, 2004
Ghost Ranch
All Church Camp registration will be going on during the month of July.
After July 25 deadline, registration will be on a space-available basis.
We know that All Church Camp doesn’t happen until September, but in order
to secure our reservations we must submit our numbers by August first.
We also need to know how much food to purchase, how many child care workers
are needed, and what supplies are needed for the children’s program.
You will
have the opportunity to register after church the first four Sundays in
July, or you may leave your registration in the church office. There is
a registration form in this issue of CHIMES. A follow-up letter with
maps and more information on what to bring will be sent to you in August.
For more
information about the program see the registration form on pages 11 &
12 in this issue of the CHIMES. We hope to see you there!

The
Walk to Emmaus
The Walk
to Emmaus is a 72-hour experience of Christian spiritual renewal and
formation.
Emmaus is open to members of any Christian denomination and is for
the development
of Christian leaders who: are members of a local church, have a
desire
to strengthen their spiritual lives, may have unanswered questions about
their faith,
understand that being a Christian involves responsibility, and are
willing
to dedicate their everyday lives to God in an ongoing manner.
Applications
are currently being accepted for the next men's Emmaus Walk which
will be
held August 19-22. Attendees are limited to the first 30 men.
The next
Emmaus
Walk for women will be later in the fall.
If you would
like to know about this wonderful weekend and are interested in
attending
or know someone who would like to, please contact Janet Hall.
Persons
who have taken the Walk to Emmaus are eligible to participate in Kairos
Prison
Ministry. More on this later.

Volunteer
Coordinator Task Force
In response
to the following vision and goal statement and the item for action, a volunteer
coordinator task force has been formed to research and report to the personnel
board and the executive board. The task force will gather data from
other churches and organizations; obtain input from staff, church boards
and committees as to the needs; review the current data system; etc. as
to the possible implementation of a volunteer coordinator.
The task
force includes: Jim Stapp, Jan Lippiatt, Verelene Stam, Dorothy Crawford,
Chair, and Kathleen Logan, staff. If you have suggestions please
contact a member of the task force.
Goal:
Spiritual and Personal Growth (Finding the passion of members):
Recognizing
the need for volunteers in the life of the church and the other demands
upon our membership’s time and energy we will explore methods to identify
individual members’ passion(s) in order to enhance the meaningfulness of
volunteer work within the church and church programs.
Item for
Action: (Volunteer Coordinator)
Data collection
and use, determine the passions and interests of members and utilize the
database to track these, and pledge of time as well as money.

Women’s
Retreat
The weekend
of October 8-10 is the United Church Women’s Retreat at Sonlight Camp in
Colorado. Kay Roberts will speak on “The Gift of Music: Growing in
Faith Together”. Kay is a former member of the United Church and
is now the pastor at the Presbyterian Church in Kent, Ohio. Those
of you who have been to the Women’s Retreat in the past don’t need to be
told about the fun, fellowship and great food. If you haven’t attended
before, come this year and find out how refreshing, relaxing and renewing
this weekend can be. The retreat begins on Friday evening and ends
after lunch on Sunday. As this is a three day weekend, you will still
have Monday to spend with family or work on weekend chores. Plan
to bring a friend – everyone is welcome – and spend the weekend learning,
having fun, and renewing old friendships and starting new ones.

Coming
to our Church this month….
Topic:
"Good News from Kenya--Thank you for your support"
Mark and
Diane Reimers will be with us on August 1st to give an update on the Kibwezi
Vocational School mission, which the United Church has been supporting
in Kenya. Mark and Diane were in Kenya in February and look forward
to reporting about this project, and also talking about their recent work
to develop a Community-Based Orphan Care project in Kibwezi. Mark and Diane
will speak briefly about these projects during both the 8:00 a.m. and the
9:30 a.m. service during "Moment for Mission" and will talk in more detail
immediately following the 9:30 a.m. service in Graves Hall for anyone in
the congregation who is interested in learning more about how our mission
dollars are being spent.
Call for
volunteers
LA Cares
will visit our congregation this coming month and is looking for volunteers
to help gather the food donation in Los Alamos and White Rock. For
further details contact Paul Gray or Linda Baker.
United Church
missions in our community and in the world….
The UC Mission
board disbursement of funds for the month of May was made to Casa Mesita,
LA Cares, LA Food Bank and the Navaho missions as part of the missions
benefiting from the Church regular support.
The following
is an outline of the missions who benefited from your support this month:
Casa Mesita
Casa Mesita
Group Home is a program designed to provide the structure and the tools
adolescent girls need to grow and mature, deal with their problems and
to achieve their goals of returning to their families or establishing an
independent life. The girls at Casa Mesita come from throughout the
state of New Mexico. They range in age from 12 to 17. They have diverse
family, cultural and economical background. They have a variety of
problems with their families, their friends, their school, and their lives.
They have in common the need for a structured and supporting living environment
and the desire to change their lives. The Casa Mesita program is
an active process of identifying problems, setting goals, establishing
plans of action and evaluating progress. The framework of the program consists
of a series of “Step contracts” whereby each girl progresses at her own
pace in assuming increasing responsibilities in return for increased privilege
in the home.
LA Cares
http://www.losalamos.org/homeless/
LA Cares
is an independent, 100% volunteer-based organization, supported solely
through donations. LA Cares serves any needy person or family living
in Los Alamos, or those homeless within the County. LA Cares has
no eligibility requirements, evaluating each situation, assessing the need
and determining how it can best help. LA Cares assistance is available
in both temporary and long-term situations. Relief is provided to
allow a client time and respite to halt a downward spiral, or to allow
other, more formal programs, such as Veteran's benefits or SSI, to be initiated.
LA Cares is a stop-gap, not a cure-all. LA Cares can provide limited
assistance with rent, utilities, and medical needs and offer food boxes
available to anyone who needs them - without having to prove eligibility.
The food distribution is the 2nd Friday of each month from 11:00AM to 1:00PM.
Los Alamos
Food Bank
http://www.losalamos.com/foodbank/
The Los
Alamos Community Food Bank has been serving individuals and families residing
in Northern New Mexico since 1994. The LA Food Bank will help anyone
facing an emergency financial problem, making it difficult to obtain food,
once every six months. The Food Bank gets their canned or boxed goods
via semi-annual food drives. Local Residents just place their food
donations outside their homes and their own Letter Carriers pick them up.
When residents of Los Alamos County need some food, because of some personal
emergency, they can just call 662-9622 and arrange for a pick-up time.
The Food Bank gets their perishables via frequent pickups at Smith's Grocery
in White Rock and the Merimac Shopping Center, Daylight Donuts, and Starbucks.
Food Bank Volunteers gather or glean food which has reached its shelf life.
Then they freeze the dairy and bakery products, and refrigerate the produce.
Every Saturday morning, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, there is a perishable food
distribution, for items which would normally have to be disposed of.
This weekly distribution is also open to folks from surrounding communities,
but not advertised extensively. It is on a first-come-first-serve-basis.
The Navajo
Missions
http://www.navajomissions.org/
The Navajo
Missions serves people, primarily the Navajo, in the Four Corners area
of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Since 1953, The Navajo
Missions has helped to meet the physical, emotional, educational and spiritual
needs of Navajo families and children. The Navajo Missions will continue
to build a future for Navajo families through programs which establish
self-sufficiency, resilience and Christian family values. Navajo
Missions reaches Navajoland through the following ministries: Four
Corners Home for Children -providing safe, loving homes to dependent children
whose parents are unable to care for them. The program provides a
home to single mothers and their children, ministering to two generations.
Cross Cultural Ministries -serving the body of Christ across cultural,
racial, denominational and generational lines to effectively communicate
and further the gospel of the Kingdom in the Four Corners, the Navajo Nation,
the First Nations and to the four corners of the world. Biblical
Counseling Center -licensed counselors giving Biblical direction, restoring
individuals, couples and families KNMI 88.9 FM -pointing people to Jesus
through Vertical Radio.

as part of the congregation, we are now in the midst of what we call “Summer

with our church. Just in case you especially love to hear a specific
style or instrument, we thought you might like to see our schedule.
Keep in mind, however, that sometimes things change, due to unexpected
circumstances. But, as of today, this is what is planned.

Care!
The pastoral
staff of The United Church deeply care about members of our congregation
who may be hospitalized or have other special needs. We invite you or members
of your family to just give us a call if we can be of help to you through
prayer or visit. Especially if you are to have same day surgery, your name
will not appear on the Pastor’s List at the hospital. A phone call will
help us be there at your time of need.

Dick
Tisinger
Virginia-born
Dick Tisinger joined the United Church of Los Alamos in 1953. After
working for 4 years, he took time off to earn his Ph.D. in Physics at Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Having spent his early years
in Phoenix, AZ, Salem, OR, and Portland, OR, he was happy to put down roots
in Los Alamos.
Although
Dick worked at LANL doing weapons testing, laser isotope separation, nuclear
safeguards, and low energy nuclear studies, working with computers is what
kept him at the laboratory. In fact, the need for computerization
is what compelled him to volunteer for several projects in the community.
Dick has
served on the United Church’s Music Board. He remembers being on
the small committee that brought the first organ into the Church.
He also served on the Membership and Evangelism Board, Ushering Committee,
Umbrella Committee, the Board of Elders, and the Finance Board, serving
the latter numerous times. Dick thought of the Finance Board as a
part of his niche and was instrumental in introducing computers in the
United Church.
As part
of the Finance Board, he arranged to purchase and set up a computer and
software database for the church secretary. The first desktop machine
was used for word processing and tracking financial contributions.
As a service to the church, Dick made the first computerized directory,
tracked Mexico Mission purchases, put out the early auction catalogs, and
trained whatever staff needed to learn to use the computer.
Even though
Dick retired cold turkey from LANL in 1990, he’s kept active in the computer
world by maintaining the data base for the Board of Directors of Lab Retiree
Group and for the Historical Society. He has also taught classes on Genealogy
at UNM-LA and the Senior Center.
He served
on the Board of LARC (Los Alamos Retirement Community), the Red Cross Chapter,
and the Ski Patrol. After serving for over 25 years on the ski patrol,
he’s no longer on the Board, but he still skis at age 74.
When his
sons were young, he served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 326 in White Rock.
One of his boys made Eagle Scout. He still serves on the district
committee for Boy Scouts.
Dick and
his late wife Ellen, raised three children in Los Alamos. Rick lives in
Dallas with his wife Toi and son Wesley; Eric lives in Phoenix with his
wife Lyndee; and Karen lives in Malaysia with her husband and four boys.
Her husband Lou works as a linguist.
Throughout
his life, he has enjoyed photography, genealogy, hiking, and climbing.
As a former member of the Los Alamos Mountaineers, he fondly remembers
climbing the Grand Teton and Popocatépatl near Mexico City.
He was the club president in 1965.
Dick’s Words
of Wisdom? “Find your niche and master what it takes.”

Our Interim Pastor
Preparing
for the New
by Howard
E. Grant, Jr.
How proud
I am of the work of our church’s two Search Committees! I ask you
to be receptive to their difficult and wondrous work. They deserve
and need your accolades and your prayers.
The
Youth Director/Pastor Search Committee continues faithfully to work seeking
the one who will help our congregation in ministry to young people. Recently
it changed chairs from Karen Edwards, who after serving brilliantly a year
in this role, passed the baton to Arnie Sierk, while Karen remains on the
committee. Their work continues apace. Meanwhile Jean Picard
and Kathleen Logan, together with many helpful parents, are taking up the
slack in ministry to youth. This summer, they are ably assisted by
our youth interns, Becky Erickson, Erin Moore, and Hallie Bare.
Our
Senior Pastor Search Committee, chaired by Mary Freese, is interviewing
candidates whom they believe best meet the needs of our congregation.
As a result, in the not-too-distant future a wondrous change will occur
at The United Church of Los Alamos. A new Senior Pastor will come
bringing joyous and fresh ideas to faithfully guide our congregation into
its future. Using the greatest of skills, this one will minister
to you with caring and love, bringing you inspiring godly messages, listening
to your deepest spiritual needs. I invite you to be open to hearing,
understanding,
and supporting our new Senior Pastor.
It
is my great honor and privilege to continue serving as your Interim Senior
Pastor until that change happens. Initially I had agreed to serve
you through July 31 of this year. Recently I have told our Executive
Board, as I now tell you, I am willing to stay even through September 12th
should I be needed that long.
Thank
you for your faithfulness in this transition time. Everyone of you has
been
wonderful.
