Officer Installation
On Sunday,
January 2, 2005 we will bring in the New Year by installing officers and
our new pastor, Don Childers. As of this writing, representatives
of the Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and American Baptist Church
will be present for the service. The service will emphasize our commitment
to Christ and to United Church. The service will also emphasize the
diversity of denominations that is present at United. Don shared
that he has received welcomes from most of the sister denominations.
He is pursuing dual recognition and standing in the United Church of Christ
and Disciples of Christ. Don has also received word that he has temporary
membership in the Santa Fe Presbytery. He has been invited to share
briefly about himself at the meeting of the Presbytery of Santa Fe in February.
The Presbytery will meet at Second Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque on
February 4-5, 2005.

Music
Sunday
On Sunday,
December 19th, the Sanctuary choir will present a very special musical
service of worship at 9:30 am. Fresh carol arrangements and new settings
of traditional text will come together to create a beautiful new Christmas
Festival of Lessons and Carols. Dr. John Leavitt, composer and arranger
of this work, is a Kansas native who also serves as artistic director and
conductor of the nationally known Master Arts and Youth Chorales, which
have performed in Carnegie Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and on the NBC
“Today Show.”
We hope you
will plan to join us as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and tell the
“greatest story ever told” in scripture and in song.

Moms
and More
Moms and More
is a group of Moms, who meet every Friday morning in the Church Lounge
from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM for fellowship, food, to learn from speakers,
and to do occasional service projects for the church. In the new year of
2005, our first meeting is on January 7th, where we will be having a white
elephant exchange. Bring any leftover or distasteful gift nobody in your
household wanted, appropriately wrapped in a grocery bag, to be exchanged
among the group. If we cannot find a home for it among one of us, I’m sure
the thrift shop will appreciate the contribution. On January 14th, we will
be helping out the Thrift Shop by sorting all the contributions that have
come in over the Christmas break. On January 21st, we will be indulging
in a Moms Day Out, where child care will be provided while Moms may choose
their own activity for the next couple of hours, be it grocery shopping
alone, a workout, a hike, shopping, returning wrong sized Christmas gifts,
manicure, hair appointment or a spontaneous get-to-gether with some other
Moms at Starbucks; the time is yours. January 28th, we are all going ice
skating. Bring appropriate apparel for falling down on ice if you are a
novice. We will meet at the church to drop children off. All are welcome,
even if your children don’t need the child care provided, as noted below.
Come join us.
Childcare is
always provided during Moms & More, and a $2.00 per child contribution
is greatly appreciated.

Morning Adult Education Classes
Beginning January
9, 2005
The Bible
From Scratch: The New Testament for Beginners by Donald Griggs
Taught by
Jerry Grindstaff 8 chapters
This class
is for anyone who has - or fears they have - little or no knowledge of
the New Testament. It also offers a good review for those who fear
they have forgotten what they once knew. The course will introduce
participants to basic skills and tools for Bible study and then provide
an overview of the content and purposes of individual books or groups of
books. The class will meet in the CE Building Lounge.
Soul
Feast: An Invitation to the Christian Spiritual Life by Marjorie
Thompson
Taught by
Barbara DeNevers 9 chapters
This class
offers an opportunity for those who wish to explore Christian spirituality.
The study will offer a framework for understanding spiritual discipline,
as well as offer guidance for developing and sustaining spiritual practices
in day to day life. Topics include prayer, spiritual reading, worship,
fasting, self-examination, and hospitality. This class will meet
in Sangry Chapel.
The Gospel
of Mary of Magdala by Karen King
Taught by
Pastor Kathleen Logan 14 chapters
There has
been some controversy over the very popular book The DeVinci Code.
Many have asked where the author came up with his ideas. One possible
source is the Gospel of Mary of Magdala. This class will explore
the work of of Karen King, Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History at
Harvard University Divinity School. It will focus on the Gospel of
Mary of Magdala: how it was recovered after being lost for fifteen hundred
years and the glimpse it offers into the conflicts and controversies that
shaped early Christianity. This class will be taught in the center
section of Graves Hall.
Brown Bag
Study will Begin
Thursday,
January 20, 2005 at noon in the lounge.
This class
will explore Joyce Rupp’s book Dear Heart Come Home: The Path of
Midlife
Spirituality.
The class will meet for one hour each Thursday for ten weeks. It
will be facilitated by Pastor Kathleen Logan. Bring your lunch and
join the discussion.

Talk from Don
It is good to be at United Church. Janice and I were greeted with
fresh snow, warm hugs, lots of good food, and lots of care and love.
We wish to thank all of you for making our arrival so meaningful.
To those who brought food; to those who worked to make the Manse so beautiful;
to those who made sure there was a warm bed, towels, soap, and the necessary
extras; to those who have so warmly
welcomed us,
Janice and I express our thanks.
This is an exciting and challenging time for ministry. Being “Church”
in the 21st Century confronts us with new challenges and many new opportunities.
As with our forefathers and mothers, we will have to seek God’s spirit
and guidance as we attempt to make the Gospel relevant and meaningful in
our time. I look forward to the challenge and the opportunities at
United Church. You have a great congregation and I look forward to
joining you in ministry.
Peace,
Don
